The first picture in my dress blues is Christmas 1989, 30 years ago, when I was home on leave. The other picture in my dress whites is graduation from the United States Merchant Marine Academy in June 1991, receiving my diploma from Vice President Dan Quayle. I am a veteran due to the fact that upon my graduation I was commissioned in the U. S. Naval Reserve. After graduation I shipped as an officer on various ships as a US Coast Guard licensed 3rd Mate and 2nd Mate for a total of 5 years. My travels took me along the U.S. coasts, Africa, and Asia. Upon completion of my travels, I stayed home for a bit to focus on my young family. Congrats to my dad, Frank Hirdning, who is also a veteran. My dad served aboard the USS Forrestal from 1959 to 1962 as a Catapult Specialist. The last picture is my dapper dad.
